It's Spring? Pull the other one...

Glancing out of our window yesterday, I saw three waxwings sheltering crossly in a tree.

The cold wind ruffled their feathers as they glowered out at the sleet, and if I could speak Waxwing I know exactly what they would have said to me; "For this we flew 1500 miles looking for Spring?"

Today, they've gone.

And frankly? I don't blame them.

(All of which is a roundabout way of saying that if I have to read one more tweet about how warm it is back in the UK right now...)

  1. Ah, so that's what he was. I've read about them, but I don't believe they are native to the Southwestern U.S. Glad to finally see what one looks like. So sorry you're having to wait so long for Spring, but surely it will be there soon? When we lived in the Midwest, Spring arrived much later, and I remember digging around in the snow by the garden bench around the beginning of February each year, looking for crocus shoots(God knows what the neighbors thought.) Just knowing they were there (albeit covered with snow) somehow made the wait more bearable...have you checked your front flowerbed for signs of life lately?

  2. MsC, Thursday, that's when I check (at least for the purposes of this blog, anyway!). I'm hoping there will be a vast improvement on last week's poor showing but bearing in mind it's snowing right now, am not hopeful!

  3. I know. We had a glorious day yesterday but it's back to cold and windy. My garden looks like a wasteland and there's no point in planting anything yet because we could get frosts up until mid-May! Sigh!

  4. We're having the weirdest weather here - cold and grey yesterday, today it's in the 20s and humid - but that's just a freaky one day thing, apparently. Still, all the spring flowers are coming out - and I hear it's raining in the UK....

  6. EPM, right now if I could jump on a flight back to Blighty, I would.

NVG, you say the nicest things!

ALW, really? Sadly enough, it does (make me feel better). Although at the end of the day, you DO still live in California - and I'm in Moscow...

  7. We had bizarre 30c heat over the weekend, but now it's blowing a gale and I've got my woolly socks on.Saw some Cranes flying over the other day, I'm hearing a lot of Cuckoos and I'm waiting to see my first Hoopoe of the year. I'd love to see a waxwing - I'm not sure if they come this way or not. Blimey, I've just read this comment back - I think I'd better go, I'm channelling Bill Oddie in a big way..!

  9. Mya, cuckoos and cranes? Now you're just showing off... (about being in Spring, not your twitching capabilities!)

    NVG, thankyou!
