Running to stand still

Brief post today, just to show I still can, despite the fact that I am:

1. ...beset by Boy #1 home from nursery on half term (damn those school holidays, damn them). If I have to deal with one more whimper about his brother, having the tv on before lunch, things not going the way he wants, the cheese in his sandwiches, the pencils not going back in the pencil case, etc etc etc I will not be responsible for how much chocolate I eat. Wow. Pretty big threat, huh... (God, I hate feeling impotent)

2. ...exhausted after staying up half the night worrying about Boy #2 who has a very nasty cough - like half the kids in the UK right now - and a streaming cold. I was pathetically grateful to the doctor this morning when he assured me that despite the fact there is nothing we can give him right now, I was right to bring him in. I am living in hope that he doesn't have me down for an over-anxious mother. I am so an over-anxious mother.

3....rushing to get to Boy #1's swim lessons which are happening every day this week. It seemed like a good idea at the time I booked it.

4. ....trying to prepare for a state visit from my brother-in-law's family for lunch. Thank god the cleaner is here this morning, our slum-like existence is temporarily masked...

5. ...what else? I know I'm forgetting something...

  1. Oh yeah, sick kids are the worst. And school holidays? Who makes these schedules up, anyway?

Hang in there. The cleaners should cheer you up a little.

  2. Hi RC,

you're right, cleaners; I wouldn't do without them. They make for a much happier - and tidier - home life. Which temporarily distracts me from Boy #2 who this evening has now moved on from refusing food to refusing drink as well. Which really freaks me out. Just had a long conversation with Husband where he talked me down, but having had various nightmares in hospital with Boy #2 on iv in the past, I always go over the top when the chance - however remote - comes up that we might need to go down that road again.

Like in my post - I am SO an over-anxious mother.

  3. Hi Potty Mummy. How do you cope with swimming lessons every day! Don't you find that towels always get trodden on whilst child is getting dried and they always need washing afterwards? Oh well, it happens here! Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. I did enjoy your reading your blogs.

  4. Hello Crystal,

thanks for the visit and luckily the daily swimming lessons are for one week only. But I know what you mean about the sopping wet towels etc - our washing machine has been working overtime and the house looks like a laundry...

  5. I think doctors would always rather you went than not. It's always easy to spot a wasted trip in retrospect.

Freeze some ice lollies (plain water, ribena, apple juice) - really good for getting kids to take liquids when ill. My doctor said to get them to suck an ice cube, but I always worried they would choke on it.

  6. Isn't it just like it? Not only Half Term but children ill too?

I sympathise entirely with regretting having to carry out commitments which seemed to be a good idea at time of booking.

Bet the swimmer will have a good time, even if you're frazzled!

(Love the previous post re party bags - I remember they used to cost a fortune; most of the items from the ones my daughter received greeted the bottom of the bin almost as soon as getting through the door - whoever thought of this in the forst place?)

  7. Hi Iota, thanks for the tip and have the ice-lolly holders already so will definitely try that one. As it turns out I was worrying needlessly of course: Boy #2 is now knocking back his milk so am feeling a bit more relaxed about it all. Thanks god. Can put my 'panicky mum' hat back in the cupboard for a while...

Hi Debio, you're right, the swimmer is having a marvellous time. Not sure how he will react to the nasty surpise that tomorrow is his last lesson - I can see trouble ahead!

  8. So glad #2 is drinking again. Hope he's feeling better too - and you! Good luck with the state visit - you should think yourself lucky to have a cleaner - I'd kill for one of those. All I've got is...me. Bugger.

I had a real chuckle imagining your Dad pumping the car exhaust fumes down mole holes - very resourceful!

  9. Mya, don't worry I thank god every day for our cleaner. I know just how lucky I am because each year she takes herself off for 4 weeks to visit family and I have to - gasp! - do it myself.

As for my dad - resourceful, yes. Did it work? No. So don't go to the trouble of putting tyre tracks on your lawn...

  10. Forgotten something?
    Clean underwear?
    Calpol?
    Bonjela?
    Sudocream?(I've forgotten the spelling)
Have you left the grill on?

By the way, I've had more than the usual comments about my Newsletter, the best yet, has been said a few times, and 'I roared with laughter' has also been said a few times, thanks Potty Mummy!

  11. Anytime, Frog - glad to help out, and you're right - I forgot the Bonjela (Boy #2 is teething, just to add to the fun).

  12. Frog/Potty Mummy: it's pseudocreme, I'm sure.

  13. I think Frog was almost right - in fact I know, it's Sudacream. We still have some. Spot the mum with the child still in nappies...
